Alain-René Lesage (1668-1747) was a prominent French novelist and playwright best known for his seminal work, “Gil Blas.” Born in Sarzeau, Brittany, Lesage grew up in a modest family and initially pursued a career in law. However, his passion for literature soon took precedence, leading him to become a key figure in the early 18th-century literary scene. Lesage’s writing is characterized by its wit, keen observation of human nature, and a distinctive blend of realism and adventure. “Gil Blas,” published in 1715, follows the picaresque journey of its titular character, capturing the complexities of society and the struggles of the individual, and has since been regarded as a classic of French literature.
