Biography

James De Mille (1833-1880) was a Canadian novelist and educator, best known for his imaginative and satirical works that blend elements of adventure and science fiction. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, De Mille pursued higher education at Acadia College before embarking on a career in academia, ultimately becoming a professor of English literature at the University of New Brunswick. His literary contributions reflect his keen insight into human nature and society, often infused with a sense of humor and a critical lens on contemporary issues.

De Mille’s most famous work, “A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder,” published posthumously in 1888, showcases his talent for combining fantastical elements with philosophical musings. The novel tells the story of a shipwrecked castaway who discovers a manuscript detailing the bizarre and dystopian society on a distant island. Through this work, De Mille explores themes of civilization and morality, leaving a lasting impact on the genre of speculative fiction.
