Biography

John Reed (1887-1920) was an American journalist, socialist activist, and writer best known for his firsthand account of the Russian Revolution in his seminal work, “Ten Days That Shook the World.” Born in Portland, Oregon, Reed graduated from Harvard University, where he developed a passion for social justice and activism. He traveled extensively, covering significant political events and capturing the voices of those often overlooked in history. His experiences in Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution profoundly shaped his worldview, leading him to immerse himself in the revolutionary fervor of the time.

Reed’s compelling narrative style and acute observations made “Ten Days That Shook the World” not only a critical historical document but also a literary classic that continues to resonate with readers today. His commitment to social reform and his belief in the power of the working class were evident throughout his work, which often challenged the status quo and advocated for systemic change. Tragically, Reed’s life was cut short at the age of 33, but his legacy endures through his writings and his influence on both journalism and the socialist movement in the early 20th century.
